About Emma Mays

Emma Mays is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a double major in Communication as well as Media and Journalism. She is focusing on advertising throughout her studies of media.

Emma Mays is an aspiring creative at UNC-Chapel Hill who hopes to go into advertising or community relations. Emma has been working as the NC Community Engagement intern for Students Against Destructive Decisions since January 2024. Here, she has worked on numerous projects but her biggest achievement has been creating a sustainable SADD chapter at her university where she has hosted many events such as a mocktail event and a crossing guard appreciation event. While working with SADD, Emma attended the Lifesavers conference as a speaker, exhibitor, and Traffic Safety Scholar. At Lifesavers, Emma was able to speak about the importance of elevating youth voices and best practices to engage youth.

Besides her work with SADD, Emma has been working with UNC Hockey on the Media Team since July of 2024. There, Emma writes game recap articles for the team and helps the marketing and community relations team promote games.

In addition, Emma is someone who values a global perspective and loves to travel. Emma recently completed a study abroad this past summer in London studying the history of the Olympic games. She also visited Paris, and Edinburgh while abroad. There, she was able to grow her comfort in new environments and gain new perspectives.

Community Involvement

Each summer since Emma has been in college, she has mentored for Elon Academy which is a non-profit college access and success program for academically promising high school students in Alamance County with a financial need and/or no family history of college. In this role, Emma spent three weeks with scholars acting as a mentor which included leading a peer group, taking scholars to classes, giving advice, being responsible for over 70 young adults with our team at a time, and many other responsibilities.
